Primary Place of residence question

Hi All,

I have a question relating to our primary place of residence.

My wife and I were relocated to the US for work in July of 2012 for 6 months. We decided to rent our out our home and have tenants in place for the next 12 months.

We have just been approached by a real estate agent who has a buyer interested in our property.
The buyers came through and like our property.
My question is:
Will we be required to pay capital gains tax as we have not been living in the property for 3.5 months?
All our mail/bills are being sent to my wife's parents home so am unsure if this means anything in particular.

Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.
