Just wondering if is it a good idea to use a loan in super, and if so, what size SMSF do you need to make it work?

If the loan is covered by rental repayments, the risk should be minimal. You cannot use a property connected to a SMSF for your own purposes, it must be investment only. SMSF usually work best when the fund is in excess of $200,000

Yes, It is superb to To Buy Investment Property, For example if you will need to buy something in an urbanized area you can make use of the property to have a farm or something that might help you to earn more. In the future when the area is much more civilized, you can sell the property in a much higher profit from the amount you bought it or you can make use of it as a commercial space if you want to.
