A recent independent survey by parcel delivery service CouriersPlease revealed that the traditional Aussie value of looking out for their mates and neighbours is still going strong in the suburbs – 3 in 4 Aussies would trust their neighbours with some of their valuables.

Alluding to their past and present community, 74% of the respondents said they would trust their neighbours with collecting mail and deliveries, looking after pets and plants, and holding a set of house keys while they are not around.

Qualifying their answers, collecting mail (82%) and receiving parcels (69%) were the responsibilities most likely to be entrusted to neighbours. Three in five respondents (63%), meanwhile, would allow their neighbour to take care of their plants while away.

Interestingly, more respondents (49%) would leave their pet with their neighbour when compared to the 46% who said that they trust their neighbour with their home key – a figure not too far from the 43% who would allow their neighbour to housesit their home while they were away.

When asked how many neighbours they trust, 37% of respondents revealed they only trust one neighbour, while a quarter (26%) trust two to three neighbours around them.

Interestingly, 38% of respondents said that they trust their neighbours more now than they did a decade ago.

The survey also found that Baby Boomers are more trusting of their neighbours than Millennials: 84% of over-60s trust their neighbour, compared with just 64% of 19-to-29-year olds.
