If you think home values in some of Australia’s housing markets are getting worse day by day, you have not seen anything yet. The housing market of Sambuca, an Italian town located in the island of Sicily, is on a middle ground, with dozens of homes on sale for just over a dollar, according to a report by CNN.
The move is intended to boost population in the rural community, which, like many other small towns in Italy, has lost residents to larger cities in recent years. To combat that, the city fathers have started selling homes for one euro – about a buck-fourteen US as of Wednesday.
Other Italian towns have tried to lure outsiders with similar programs, but Sambuca officials say that they’ve done away with much of the red tape that usually comes along such deals, CNN reported.
“As opposed to other towns that have merely done this for propaganda, this city hall owns all €1 houses on sale,” said Giuseppe Cacioppo, deputy mayor and tourist councilor of Sambuca. “We’re not intermediaries who liaise between old and new owners. You want that house, you’ll get it in no time.”
Of course, there is a catch. New owners must promise to refurbish their home within three years, at a cost starting at about €15,000 ($17,200), CNN reported. They must also pay a €5,000 security deposit, which will be returned once the refurbishment is complete.
But buyers will find the outlay worth it, Cacioppo said.
“Sambuca is known as the City of Splendor,” he told CNN. “This fertile patch of land is dubbed the Earthly Paradise. We’re located inside a natural reserve, packed with history. Gorgeous beaches, woods and mountains surround us. It’s silent and peaceful, an idyllic retreat for a detox stay.”
Sambuca is an ancient town, founded by Greeks and conquered by the Saracens around A.D. 830. The city is a patchwork of architectural styles, with a heavy Arab influence. But with the population shrinking, Cacioppo told CNN that the town needed fresh blood.
“We can’t afford to lose our lovely Arab heritage,” he said. “Luckily, foreigners are lending a hand in this rescue crusade.”
