With Easter coinciding with Anzac Day this year, many Australians are looking to take advantage of the extra holiday time and do something special. Whether you’re planning to get away or just stay at home – here’s our top tips on saving money over the vacation…
1) House swap
If you’re looking for a change of scenery but can’t afford the cost of a hotel, consider a house swap. Several websites such as www.homeexchange.com provide international listings with interested parties, or you could simply ask your interstate friends if they want to do a last-minute exchange.
2) Book a “secret hotel”
If you’re spontaneous and don’t mind surprises, check out the “secret hotel” at www.lastminute.com.au. You can receive up to 75% off on luxury hotels. While the hotel is a mystery, the discount, star rating and locality is guaranteed.
3) Relocation rentals
If you’re flexible and looking for a one-way driving holiday, check out hire companies that offer relocation rentals. These companies will let you hire a vehicle for dirt cheap (starting as low as $1/day) as long as you pick up and drop off the car by set dates. Visit www.standbycars.com or www.relocationcarrental.com.au . You can also find relocation rentals for motorhomes on www.drivenow.com.au/onewayrentals.jspc.
If you’re staying at home this year, why not look for local events to volunteer at? You’ll get free access to the event and some good karma to boot. Volunteers for the 2011 Sydney Royal Easter receive 14-day access to the show for themselves, plus one single-day entry ticket for a friend or family member, free transport, an official uniform, meal vouchers for their shifts, exclusive access to the Volunteer Green Room and job specific coaching/training. While the main recruitment for 2011 has concluded applications are still being considered to cover gaps in the roster.
Another big event to consider is the Canberra’s National Folk Festival.
5) Coupons and candy
Kids love candy at Easter, but why not save a few bucks and substitute some of the sweets with coupons for equally desirable treats. Coupons that let kids get out of a chore, stay up late or have a sleepover could go down just as well as chocolate eggs. And who knows, maybe you’ll end up saving on the dental bill as well!
