Designing a colorful life

By Jacqueline So | 30 Oct 2019

Lisa Claes has always been a jack of all trades. Her unusual career path has taken her from being the youngest female to qualify as a barrister in Queensland to where she is today – as CEO of data and analytics giant CoreLogic.

“While I’ve needed to master many skills as I’ve climbed the career ladder, I’ve found that one of the most important, yet understated, is the power of personal impact,” Lisa says.

  • Career trajectory: Barrister, banker, data and analytics
  • Career highlight: Youngest female to qualify for the Queensland bar
  • Inspiration: Her grandmother, who lived to almost 100 in Far North Queensland on a remote cane farm. “She was a brilliant seamstress, crocheter and embroiderer,” Lisa says.

A big part of being the best version of herself was indulging her long-held interest in fashion design, a passion inspired by her grandmother, who was a skilled seamstress.

“During university, I was an impoverished law student who couldn’t afford any form of ‘off the rack’ couture and had to pursue the ‘self-made to measure’ option, so I taught myself to design and sew,” she says.

Nowadays, Lisa’s home is piled with books on fashion, and she draws inspiration from brands like Gucci and Prada. She continues to create her own bespoke outfits, and loves nothing more than exploring for new fabrics and ideas.

“The best dress fabric bazaar is in China in Lo Wu; it’s an entire floor the size of an AFL field, crammed with millions of rolls of exquisite fabric. A good day is taking a 50-minute train ride, leaving Hong Kong and returning carrying bolts of exquisite fabric from China. I dream of the possibilities to the rhythm of the train – which are endless!”
