Queensland’s top 20 burglary hotspots have been revealed, and 13 are within approximately 25km of the Brisbane CBD.
According to the RACQ Insurance Home Security Index, the majority of the top 20 postcodes for burglary insurance claims are within striking distance of the city centre.
Overall, it was found that people who live in Brisbane were more likely to have experienced a home break-in than those in regional areas (27% vs 21%).
“The study revealed many Queenslanders also know someone who has had their home broken into (83%),” said RACQ Insurance executive manager, communications, Mike Sopinski. “However, this differs significantly between Brisbane and regional Queensland (85% compared to 74%).”
Underwood, around 20km south-east of the CBD, was named as Queensland’s burglary hotspot, with 3.95 out of 100 RACQ policy holders making theft claims in the area last year.
Two postcodes in the top 20 are within approximately 5km of the CBD (4103 and 4120), encompassing the suburbs of Annerley, Fairfield, Fairfield Gardens, Greenslopes and Stones Corner.
Within around a 10km hop of the CBD, the postcodes of 4011 and 4107 made the top 20, which include Clayfield, Hendra, Salisbury and Salisbury East.
“An analysis of RACQ Insurance home theft claims shows thieves have preferred locations to strike,” said Sopinski. “Although Underwood and surrounds has been identified as the state’s home break-in hotspot, the 20 most popular suburbs for theft are located in a range of areas across the state.”
