Tenancy complaints are becoming more and more common in New South Wales according to the state's Fair Trading department.
Figures released yesterday by NSW Fair Trading have revealed that tenancy issues were the number one cause of complaints to the department during the 2014-15 financial year.
A total of 46,973 complaints of all types were received last financial year, with tenancy issues accounting for 4,045 of them.
That figure represents a 166% increase on the 1,522 tenancy complaints received in the 2013-14 financial year when tenancy issues were only the sixth highest reason for complaints.
“Tenancy entered the top-10 list in 2013-14,” NSW Fair Trading commissioner Rod Stowe said.
“Helping NSW people resolve tenancy problems continues to be a key role for the agency’s dispute resolution experts,” he said.
It seems real estate is a common source for frustration for NSW residents though, with other areas of the industry also generating more complaints than compared to the previous 12-month period.
Complaints around house construction totalled 2,282 for the 2014-15 financial year and was the fourth most common cause for complaint, compared to 2013-145 when it was the fifth most common cause with 1,829 complaints.
The purchase and sale of property generated 1,082 complaints and was the 10th most common cause of complaint after not being inside the top-10 in 2013-14.
