Holiday homes for bushfire victims

The state government of New South Wales is urging property owners to list their holiday homes to help give shelter to those affected by the bushfires.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward said vacant holiday homes will be able to provide affected families with a safe and secure place to stay.

"If you own a property in a bushfire-affected area that isn't being used right now, it could be providing a family with a safe and secure place to stay in their time of need," Ward said.

Ward said the NSW government's Bushfire Housing Assistance Service will be able to help people who have lost their homes find suitable short-term to long-term accommodation.

Financial assistance through rental bond loans and advance rent payments will also available to those in need.

New South Wales Transport Minister Andrew Constance also joined the call, urging holiday homeowners not just in Sydney, but also in Canberra and Melbourne, to welcome displaced families.

"We need rentals to help support families who have lost everything in the bushfires and need a place to stay," he said in a series of tweets.
