New apartments scheduled to rise in Melbourne’s “sandbelt suburbs”

Strong demand for properties in Melbourne’s south east and a growing population is creating a surge in apartment development in the city’s “sandbelt suburbs”.

The sandbelt suburbs are a triangular group of suburbs extending south from Brighton along the coast of Port Phillip Bay to Frankston and as far east as Heatherton.

Many City of Kingston suburbs are experiencing an increase in new apartment developments. A report prepared by Urbis in August states that there are currently 25 developments within the area. This translates into 1534 new apartments within the next three years.

Meanwhile, a recent research study conducted by Kingston City Council projects that in the next 15 years, the City of Kingston’s population is estimated to increase by 24,000 people. The majority of these new residents will live in key activity centres, with the proportion of apartments expected to rise from 1% to 16%.

Residents are drawn to the sandbelt suburbs because of the well-appointed amenities, close proximity to the CBD and bayside beaches, as well as the numerous education and employment opportunities.

According to Patrick Archer, state manager at Cedar Woods Properties Limited, his firm chose to build new apartments in the area because of the growing demand. The firm recently launched the Wattle Apartments at the firm’s master planned Jackson Green community.

The Wattle Apartments is located at the entry of Jackson Green in Clayton South, and is complemented by an adjacent central park.
