Mixing business with pleasure has been the key to investing success for Defence Housing Australia chief economist Daniel Carton.

“My wife and I purchased our first investment property together in 2002; our investment portfolio includes a house in Canberra and another in Jervis Bay, and an apartment in Canberra’s CBD,” he says

Of the bunch, Daniel’s favourite investment is the Jervis Bay property, purchased in 2012 at the bottom of the market, which offers him much more than just cash flow.

“Jervis Bay is a beautiful part of the South Coast and a tourist hotspot. When the house is available, it’s a great place to holiday with our five kids,” he says. “As a family, we have built great memories of going to the beach, many visits to local institution the Husky Pub, bike-riding, stand-up paddleboarding, long bushwalks, bonfires and exploring the wider Shoalhaven region.”

More family moments like these are what Daniel aims to enjoy in his retirement.

“Our ultimate goal is to have the resources for a comfortable retirement and to be in a position to assist our kids to enter the property market when they are ready.”
